Terms of Use
Your plan, plainly.
These are Jurnl’s own terms for subscriptions and our service. They sit alongside Apple’s licence for the app, and nothing in them affects your rights as a consumer.

01
About these terms.
These terms are between you and But When Ltd (“Jurnl”, “we”, “us”), registered in England and Wales, company number 16950733, with its registered office at 9 Hassendean Road, London, England, SE3 8TR. They cover Jurnl subscriptions and how our service works.
Your licence to use the app is Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement, and purchases are also governed by Apple’s App Store terms. These terms add to that licence. Where they differ, Apple’s licence governs the app licence itself, and these terms govern your subscription and our service.
Our privacy notice explains what happens to your information.
Nothing in these terms affects your rights as a consumer under the law that applies to you.
02
What Jurnl is.
Jurnl is a journal for your device. If you allow AI sharing, Jurnl can offer questions and write short reflections drawn from your own words, using an outside AI service. Without it, you can write with Jurnl’s built-in questions.
Reflections aren’t guaranteed. One is written only when a grounded reflection can be made from what you wrote, so some pages get none. A reflection can be wrong, and it isn’t advice of any kind.
Jurnl is not a medical, therapy or crisis service. Settings → Support resources lists services that can help now.
03
Starting free.
- Your first page is free.
- With AI sharing on, that page can use a limited amount of help: up to three follow-up question requests while you write, and one reflection for that page, where one can be grounded in what you wrote. With AI sharing on, Jurnl can request it when you close the page. If AI sharing is on and the page offers “Ask for this page’s note” while you’re using the free first page, you can ask for that same reflection later from the page. A request that may have reached our service counts even if no question comes back. A confirmed eligibility refusal before AI dispatch does not use a request. An uncertain connection failure is not proof of a refusal, so this isn’t a promise of three questions.
- When the free follow-up questions are used up, the page says so. You can keep writing and close the page as usual.
- More pages, and AI help with them, need a plan.
- Your first page stays yours to read, keep and back up, whatever you choose. If you subscribe later, it can join later reflections like your other pages.
04
Plans.
New in-app subscription or trial signup waits while a required age or location check is unresolved or not satisfied. Choosing to keep AI sharing off is different. This does not pause an existing trial or subscription, change its billing dates, or remove access you already have to writing, restore or subscription management.
- MonthlyRenews every month. A 14-day free trial, if you’re eligible.
- YearlyRenews every year. A 14-day free trial, if you’re eligible.
- Founding yearlyRenews every year, at a lower yearly price kept while your subscription continues. No free trial.
Prices and eligibility. The price in your currency, and whether a trial applies to you, are shown in the app and on Apple’s purchase sheet before you confirm. Apple decides eligibility.
Founding plan. A founding yearly plan may be offered for a limited time. Its offer dates, and how to join, are set out with that offer. It has no free trial.
The founding yearly price is kept while you remain continuously subscribed to that plan. If you turn off renewal during an active paid period, access continues until that period ends. If you later rejoin or change plans, the price and terms shown by Apple at that time apply; Apple may make a previously preserved price available again.
One person. A Jurnl subscription is for one person. It isn’t available through Apple’s Family Sharing.
AI help and your plan. Your plan includes AI help only while AI sharing is on, on that installation of the app. Turning AI sharing off, or never turning it on, doesn’t change your plan, price or billing. Apple’s refund process and your statutory rights remain available.
05
Payment, renewal and cancelling.
Charges. Apple charges your Apple Account when you confirm, or when a free trial ends. The plans screen shows which, and the first charge date.
Renewal. Plans renew automatically unless cancelled. To avoid an unwanted renewal at the end of a trial, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends (Apple’s cancellation guidance), and follow the renewal details Apple shows for your plan. Apple notifies you of price increases and asks for your agreement where required.
Managing or cancelling. In Jurnl, Settings → Subscription → Manage subscription opens Apple’s page; you can also use your Apple Account’s subscriptions. Deleting the app doesn’t cancel. After cancelling, your plan runs to the end of the paid period.
Refunds. Apple handles refunds (reportaproblem.apple.com); we can’t issue them ourselves. Your statutory rights are unaffected.
Closing a page never charges you.
06
If your subscription ends.
Your writing stays yours. Nothing is deleted.
- Your pages, reflections and photos stay readable, and Back up & restore keeps working.
- New pages pause until you subscribe again.
- Each page you’d already started can be closed once, as it is. Nothing new can be added to it, and no reflection is requested for it. A page closed this way stays without a reflection, even if you subscribe again.
- If you subscribe again, new pages are available again, and AI help with them while AI sharing is on.
- If Jurnl temporarily can’t confirm access — for example when the App Store can’t be reached — your existing pages, notes, photos and backups remain available. Starting new pages may still be allowed for the limited period in “Without a connection”, when the device has reliable records of earlier access; otherwise new pages wait for verification.
- A known withdrawal of access, including a refund that withdraws the relevant coverage, doesn’t qualify for that allowance. Your content remains available, but keeping it doesn’t by itself allow new writing.
07
Without a connection.
What you type is saved on your device without a network.
Starting new pages needs Jurnl to check your subscription. If access cannot be checked, a limited writing allowance may continue for up to seven days beyond the coverage last confirmed on that device. It ends sooner if Apple confirms access has ended or been withdrawn.
The allowance isn’t available if the device’s own records of earlier access can’t be relied on. AI help waits until your subscription can be checked.
08
Your writing and AI sharing.
You own what you write. We claim no rights to it.
AI sharing is your choice. It stays off unless you allow it, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings → AI sharing. With it on, Jurnl sends parts of your writing to its AI service only to produce your questions, your reflections and the small details they rely on, such as recurring themes and moods, as the privacy notice explains. Your writing isn’t used to train AI.
09
Fair use.
Please don’t try to interfere with Jurnl’s service, get around its limits or its subscription checks, access it other than through the app, or use it to send material that isn’t your own journal writing. We may refuse or limit requests that do. This never affects pages you’ve already kept.
10
Availability and changes.
Jurnl is provided in English. Its AI features can be offered only in places our AI provider supports, so they may not be available everywhere the App Store is. AI help also depends on our service, the AI company and your connection, so it may sometimes be unavailable, slower or changed. We’ll take reasonable care to provide Jurnl as described.
If we change the AI company, we’ll update the privacy notice first, and the app will ask for your choice again. If we change these terms in a way that affects your subscription, we’ll say so in the app before the change applies. You can cancel through Apple if you don’t agree.
11
Responsibility.
We aren’t responsible for losses that weren’t foreseeable, or that come from causes outside our reasonable control. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t legally be limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
Your journal lives on your devices and in your iCloud. Please keep backups you care about.
12
Which law applies.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you’re a consumer, this doesn’t take away the protection of mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in the courts of England and Wales or in the courts where you live, if the law allows you to.
Apple’s licence agreement has its own terms about the law that applies to the app licence.
13
Younger writers.
Jurnl is intended for adults and teenagers aged 13 and over. Support for younger writers is planned for later.
Purchases are made through Apple, and Apple’s account rules, including those for children’s accounts, apply to them.
